Stratigraphic Matrix Diagram
The matrix diagram above shows an extract of the spits from the waterlogged
area to the west of the spring (Area 11AD) indicating their relationships
to each other. Click on the spit number which you wish to see in more detail.

Discussion
This was the fifth spit (beneath spit 011AD00063
and equal to the material in spit 011AD00065)
of a silty clay layer (Munsell 10YR 3/1), excavated across the waterlogged
area to the west of the spring pool. The Munsell colour varies considerably
for this layer, because although it exhibits a blueish-green tinge when
exposed, it oxidises within half an hour to a much browner colour. Some
organic material is now surviving (small wooden fragments and a beetle).
Finds included fired clay, unfired clay and two flint flakes. Animal bone
finds are increasing in density (mostly cattle, though sheep/goat, horse
and pig are also present). This was the final removal of the clay layer,
as it sealed a chalk gravel layer (given numbers 011AD00070 and 011AD00072
in 1990) which remained unexcavated that year. It was excavated in 1992
as 011BD00856.
